My Adventure Story
Left Belle Isle at the head of the Detroit River on Friday, April 17th in my Eddyline Falcon with 5 Kruger Sea Wind paddlers. We were attempting to re-trace the route taken by British Explorer Hugh Heward across Michigna in 1790. Paddling the route mostly solo, I landed at the 12th Street Beach in Chicago, IL on Saturday, May 2 after completion of the 36.5 mile crossing from Michigan City, IN. The route followed the Detroit River to the Mouth of the Huron River, up the Huron to Portage Creek, then up Portage Creek. Then came the 8 mile portage around the Portage Swamp to the Portage River, Portage River to the Grand River, the Grand to Lake Michigan, then following the shoreline south. Weather was crap for most of the trip, but the resulting flooding conditions allowed for this trip to be a success. Without the excess water up in the headwaters, the smaller creeks would have been pretty difficult to manage.
