My Adventure Story
"All for a pig roast" sums up this trip since any excuse is a good one to make an epic cross-country trip like this! Departing Springbank Calgary on a Thursday morning the only fixed goal was to make it to Mulege for the Saturday night pig roast at Hotel Serenidad. The rest of the routing was strictly VFR and planned on the fly so to speak.
Stops on the Baja peninsula included:
San Felipe for customs entry to Mexico,
Mulege for the pig roast,
Laguna San Ignacio for whale watching,
Campo Rene for a cool landing on a beach/road/airstrip at a remote fish camp (only two of the four planes stayed overnight @$25/night),
Loreto for scenic small town civilization and a 5-star hotel on the beach,
Punta Pescadero for more 5-star accomodations with a private airstrip,
Alfonsina's at Gonzaga Bay for the best sunrise/sunsets imaginable, fresh fish platters to stuff us all and the neatest spot to park your plane next to your hotel room! oh, on a sandy airstrip that's under water twice a month at high tide!
Having the comraderie of other aircraft for wingmen adds a lot of fun to any trip. The Calgary Flying Club is an excellent venue to meet other adventurous pilots to plan a trip.
