Observation Point:
The hike from the canyon floor to Observation Point is four miles (eight, round trip) with an elevation gain of about 2157 ft (6507 – 4350). This hike is a good start as it gives a great overview of the main Zion canyon as well as many of the classic Zion locations and hikes.
The trail starts at Weeping Rock (a separate hike) and ascends via switchbacks cut right into the side of the canyon walls. At about 0.3 miles there is a separate trail into HiddenCanyon. The trail then enters EchoCanyon where you get a break from the hot sun. This can also be a nice place to stop on the way back to soak your feet in a cold stream. As the name implies, the canyon walls close in on you at some points. Heed the warnings and stay clear when rain threatens as flash floods can quickly wash through the canyons.
At two miles you reach the intersection of the East Rim Trail (see separate trip report for 6/12-13/2010). The last mile is fairly level along the plateau. The views from the top into the main canyon are spectacular.
