My Adventure Story
While waiting for a permit to enter Glacier Bay, we decided to take a side trip to Tenakee Springs to try out the sulfur hot springs and do some sightseeing. On our way we encountered a large pod of Humpback whales and witnessed their unique bubble net feeding on a school of herring. They all dive together and send a circle of bubbles up which trap the herring. Then they come to the surface together with mouths open for a gullet full of dinner. Very impressive to see so many whales working together. Later we witnessed a flock of eagles feeding on another school of herring in their own way. Tenakee Springs is a delightful little town with vacation cottages along the shore and abundant wild flowers along the dirt road. We sampled the cinnamon buns at the bakery, took a hot mineral bath (separate times for men and women as no clothes are allowed) and enjoyed visiting with the friendly residents.
