My Adventure Story
With ceilings down at 1500 AGL I chose to depart IFR, and after about three minutes in IMC I climbed out through cloud and got into clear air on top at 7000 ASL. The flight up to the Ameson VOR was uneventful. I turned to intercept the radial outbound that would take me over Carey Lake and began my descent. I spent another 3 minutes in IMC then broke out into a hole where I could see the Carey Lake strip at its eastern edge. With the wind from west that meant I had to fly under the overcast for the circuit for 28. I ende up flying it at about 500 AGL. My first "contact" approach, and it worked.
The range of the Ameson VOR was less than 30 NM. The DRCO also seems to have the same cone of ambiguity as the VOR, in that when I was right over the station I had great difficulty calling London Radio. I filed a report with FSS when I landed. Maybe it will be fixed eventually.
