Explored the Protection Mountain area under blue skies today.  Climbed through dense trees for 5km and 3000 vertical feet before any views emerged so its no surprise you won't find this trip described in the guidebooks or on any map.  At the top of the mountain, an old mine remains with some scattered remains of an old shack with a few metal bits including an old axle.  A very out of the way place for a mine, I had plenty of respect for the men who worked this place so high and inaccessible.  Great views of Mt Temple across the valley as well as the Valley of the Ten Peaks.  Also tempting me was the Baker Creek valley leading to Wonder Valley.
