We hiked up the Lake Ann-Maple pass trail from the trailhead at Rainy pass on the North Cascades Hwy. (elev. 4840').  We turned off the trail at Heather pass and took a boot path across two rock slides, past Lewis lake to a campsite at Wing Lake. (elev. 6900')  In the morning we climbed up to a notch in the NE ridge, roped up and did a running belay to the summit. (elev. 8970')  The ridge is very narrow with lots of exposure on both sides, Class 4 and low to mid 5 with lots of loose rock.
