Starting out from Show Low, AZ southwest on US 60 to the Salt River.
Then turning up the Salt River going north thru the Apache reservation into Tonto NF and then north up AZ188 to AZ260 on the Mogollon Rim.
Good plan, but bad execution.
The canyon is spectacular, as is the drive up out of it to the north. After about 3 hours, I came to the point where I was to drive out of the reservation into Tonto NF. I finally found the road, but it had not been used in years. My alternate at that time was to continue on toward the south to hit another road going into the Natl Forest. When I found that road, it had been bulldozed closed. I began to suspect that the Apaches did not want the gringos crossing into or out of the reservation on the back roads. Thus I began the long drive back to US60. It was a disappointment, but the driving and the scenery going both directions were spectacular, which was worth the time.
