Day 1 Long Beach to Isthmus
The crew joined us and we departed as we left the break wall we spotted dolphins. We set our sails as we headed across the channel to Catalina Island. We learned how to work with lines on the pin and set the jibs. We sail into isthmus cove and dropped anchor. After a scrumptious dinner we gathered at the stern for chantey night. Where the crew learned a number of songs to help haul the sails the next day.
Day 2 Isthmus to Catalina Harbor
We started the day right with ukuleles and polar bear. After breakfast we snorkeled at little fisherman’s cove. We saw sheep crabs, giant black sea hares and a number of other cute invertebrates. Then we had our first practice challenge set were we learned our lines. After challenge set we headed for Catalina harbor and on our way learned a bit about marine mammals. Before we could enter the harbor we struck our sails. At Catalina harbor we climbed up to the fighting top and had a great view of a grass fire on the island. Fire fighters and helicopters were able to the control the fire in a couple of hours. After dinner we got back into our swimsuits and waited for dark. Once it was dark we bravely jumped into the water to experience bioluminescence first hand.
Day 3 Catalina harbor to Santa Barbara
Some woke up early to polar bears other saved their strength to shred some awesome waves after breakfast at shark harbor. After boogie boarding we set sail and headed for Santa Barbra Island. Along the way we learned about navigation, marlinspike seamanship and took care of Tole taking the helm and tacking the boat. After dinner we had a visit from King Bowline who taught use the Turkshead and the monkey’s fist knots.
Day 4 Santa Barbra to Anacapa
We woke up to the call of sea lions and after breakfast we joined them. The sealion came out to great us demanding our attention while the elephant seals were more reticent hanging back by the shore. After the snorkel we quickly changed and went ashore for a hike and picnic on Santa Barbra Island. We then headed for Anacapa Island learning about plankton and fish along the way. Some were lucky enough to see some Mola Mola during our fish class. After dinner on the boat we headed ashore for a sunset hike. After quietly watching the slip below the horizon we headed back to the boat seeing some great bioluminescence on the way.
Day 5 Anacapa to Toyon Bay
We started the day with our third snorkel and the sun came out just as we got out of the water. A group headed aloft to loose square sails and we headed south. As we were setting sails we spotted a whale. After we finished setting sails we broke into sea watches to sail through the night.
Day 6 Toyon Bay
We sailed into Toyon bay early in the morning having seen dolphins, flying fish, and sea lions along the way. After a relaxing morning we woke up with a rope swing assisted polar bear. After lunch we went ashore to Toyon and requisitioned some kayaks for a beautiful paddle with bat rays and an excellent kayak challenge. After a BBQ dinner we went to check out the Toyon bay labs petting both sharks and invertebrates.
Day 7 Toyon Bay to Long Beach
We started the day with one last polar bear. Then we set sail completing the challenge set successfully. Then we gave our all to super pride giving back to the Tole Mour. After lunch we docked at long beach and bid our reluctant farewell and lowered our burgee. Thanks for a great trip.
