My Adventure Story

Length: 92 miles / 164 km

Duration: 6 days of paddling

First day we had nice conditions with lot of wind (5 Bf) from the back, so we have been able to make some progress, even with bigger and steeper waves because of some current. Then the weather turned real bad with winds around 8 Bf, snow and temperatures around -5 C°. Fortunately we found a small hunting cabin with cave some protection against the wind. But it was still very cold and the roof had many leaks, so after three days of waiting every thing was wet. Luckily we had some fishes and even found a duck for eating.

The rest of the journey the weather stayed cold and cloudy with temperatures around the freezing point. And we had also a lot of north-westerly winds, so we paddled all the time against the wind. Mostly the winds get stronger around noon, so we paddled often early in the morning and spent the afternoon with hiking and fishing.

Only the last two days the weather was nice, with few winds (2 Bf) against us and a lot of sun. We even could lie on the soft ground and enjoy the warm sun. The nearer we where getting to Paamiut, the more boat traffic we met. Some fishermen and lots of seal hunters.

Be aware of the weather in this part of Greenland. There can be strong föhn storms with winds up to 100 knots. The conditions on the sea can also with normal weather change in 10 minutes from flat water to 3 feet waves. Between Arsuk and Paamiut there are no polar bears at the moment, but there could be when more pack ice is arriving.
