Day 9 of 10 – Lake Magog Campground to Howard Douglas Campground

See Trip labeled “Canada’s Great Divide Trail – Peter Lougheed to Sunshine" for overview of the entire 10-day trip as well as the other trips for each segment.  The Keyword is GDT1109 to bring them together in a search.

The hike north to Lake Og, through the Valley of the Rocks, and then over Citadel Pass is fantastic.  I enjoyed this very much although carrying that heavy pack up to the pass was a bit difficult.

Before you head up the particular drainage to take you over Citadel Pass, you hike high up on the eastern side of the Simpson River drainage.  This provides a spectacular viewpoint of this large valley.

Citadel Pass is wonderful as well both on the Assiniboine and Banff sides of the divide.  The descent down the path once crossing into Banff provides spectacular scenery.

The Howard Douglas campground is about 4 km (2.5 miles) from the pass.  This campground is small, only allowing five campsites.  In addition, the campsites are very close together.  The outhouse is also in quite poor condition and needs maintenance.

Total elevation gain for the day was 605 m (1,984 ft) and elevation loss was 510 m (1.672 ft) for a total daily elevation change of 1115 m (3.657 ft) over a distance of about 18 km (11 miles).
