Cortez, CO to Holbrock, AZ

Cayon de Chelly Day 5 10/1/11

Well I’m writing this from memory on Oct. 9th, from home. So I hope I get this right, if not we'll just have to go back!

We drove out of Cortez through the town of Shiprock, NM. It looked like the town was getting ready to have a swap meet/farmers market. We went past a nice ridge. Went town past some steep hills through red sand stone in the town of Lukachukai, AZ. We arrived in Chinle, AZ, the town has changed since the last time we were there, all the streets are paved. We drove into Canyon de Chelly National Park it‘s also changed the last time we were there everything is paved and signs to all the different view points. We drove south past the north rim of the canyon and stopped at some of the view points. A nice lady from Kentucky took our picture at the Spider rock over look. Even though the sky was cloudy the temperature was comfortable and the best part is that there was no wind. All of the roads we drove on, in the Navajo nation are well maintained and are in very good condition. The only hazard we noticed on the roads were the horses, cows, dogs, and sheep in the middle of the road or crossing the roads without much notice, so you have to be alert. After leaving Canyon de Chelly we headed towards the Petrified Forest and the Painted dessert. We stopped at some of the over looks and enjoyed the scenery.

After leaving Cortez, CO, we headed towards Canyon de Chelly, Petrofied Forest, and the Painted Dessert all in Arizona. It was a dry day no wind and comfortable temperature and as beautiful as we remembered it all.
