My Adventure Story
Sunday, January 29, 2012 --- Santiago and Manolin took the Tofino out on Tampa Bay for a test run with the new BSD sail rig, also loaned to us by Nick Hall. Thanks, Nick... this wouldn't be possible without your help!
Winds were pretty light. Sometimes they were blowing out of the north at about 10mph, but much of the time it was very calm. The aka (crossbar on the outrigger) had been broken and a temporary repair using an aluminum sleeve, duct tape and zip ties allowed us to at least test the rig. I'm working on a more permanent solution.
By early afternoon were were having rudder problems. We didn't have full range of motion on the rudder, then the rudder cable on the left foot peddle came off it's track. We didn't have the tools or parts to repair it with us, so we had to call it a day early. I will fix the left rudder controls and reinforce the right side while I'm at it. I don't want to have rudder problems in the middle of the Everglades!
I'm also going to experiment with the rudder blade itself to see if I can increase the surface area while the sail is in use.
