My Adventure Story
A juvenile gray whale was freed from hundreds of pounds of drift net by a trained disentanglement team led by Captain Dave Anderson (dolphinsafari.com) and Dana Friedman (Pacific Marine Mammal Center) on Saturday, March 24, 2012. Other team members included Tom Southern, Mark Tyson, Barry Curtis (skippering support boat Aloha), Scott Davis (PMMC), Steve Plantz and Mike Johnson. Dolphin Safari captain and crew attached a buoy and marker lamp in the dark Friday night. Captain Peter Bartholomew and crew of the Aloha Kate stood watch over the area Friday night and Saturday morning. The young whale was nicknamed "Bart" in Peter's honor.
Thanks are also due the local tour boat captains from Newport Beach (newportwhales.com) that offered aid and refreshments for the support boat team members while treating their guests to an unanticipated drama from a respectful distance.
