After packing up personal gear, food, and scientific equipment, the Beam Reach crew embarked on a 3-day study of the potential marine environmental impacts of coal docks and terminals. Departing Bellingham at 15:30, their 42' sailing research vessel, the Gato Verde, passed inside Lummi Island and proceeded to an anchorage in Sucia State Park.
