Out West - Day 10

What a day! We saw an incredible variety of beautiful landscapes. We left Phoenix into the smoky haze from the Guardian fire that is raging to the east of where we were. It was heavy enough at one point that we could smell the smoke.
We had the flat desert landscape to start and then we went into the hills. Lots of curves, switchbacks and changes in elevation for John to play with. We saw more than one group of motorcyclists taking advantage of the day and roads.
We went through a town that is built into the mountain side. We agreed that we would not want to traverse the narrow roads during the winter.
Our stop for the day was the Montezuma Castle National Monument. These cliff dwellings are so fragile that the public is not allowed to walk up to or in them. There is enough left to know that a great deal of work went into building of these dwellings. There was a lot of material hauled up the cliff!
We had lunch just outside of Sedona at the Full Moon Saloon. They make a great hamburger. As we went into Sedona we saw many sculptures outside the various art galleries.
We also traveled the Red Rock Scenic Byway. Scenic and beautiful! The large rock formations in various shades of red were beautiful. They were so large it was hard to grasp the scale.
We are in Flagstaff, Arizona for a few nights. Tomorrow we go to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.
