Emergency in the Snow: A Snowmobiler's Tale of Survival

RESCUE PROFILE: Shawn Irvin
Shawn Irvin Shawn Irvin's story echoes the sentiment shared by many outdoor enthusiasts: adventures in nature are exhilarating but come with inherent risks. For Shawn, his decades-long love affair with snowmobiling recently took a dramatic turn, highlighting the crucial role of preparedness technology in extreme sports and travel.

A seasoned snowmobiler, Shawn had always been aware of the potential dangers of his favorite pastime. Shawn's passion for snow sports runs deep. He has skied since the age of two and has been snowmobiling for decades. While he has the spirit of adventure, he understands nature's unpredictability, especially when going “off the grid.”

On Easter Sunday of 2024, Shawn ventured into the snowy expanses outside Park City, Utah, unaware that this trip would be unlike any other. The snow fell relentlessly, as Shawn and his friend found themselves in a remote area, far from any means of communication. Shawn rode over what he thought was no more than a hump of snow – something he’d done many times before – but instead faced a 20-foot drop and shattered his femur, rendering him immobile and stranded.

In a moment of clarity, Shawn reached for his SPOT device – the same device he had carried unused for years. Until now, it had always been for peace of mind. With a press of a button, he activated the SOS signal, summoning emergency Search and Rescue right to where he fell.

Maintaining his composure, Shawn understood the gravity of the situation and the importance of staying calm – even as his companion, less experienced with traversing the wilderness, looked to him for guidance. Within 45 minutes, Search and Rescue arrived, airlifting him to the local hospital in Provo, UT in a rescue that very likely saved his life.

Reflecting on his harrowing ordeal, Shawn emphasizes the pivotal role played by both the SPOT device and the dedicated Search and Rescue team. This experience has reinforced the need for outdoor enthusiasts to equip themselves with the necessary tools and skills to navigate the wilderness safely.

“Having your avalanche gear and tools are essential, but your SPOT device is a must-have too. Travelling off the grid into high consequence terrain mandates that you have this type of communication tool. It’s your lifeline to surviving in critical situations,” Shawn said.

In Shawn's eyes, the SPOT device is a "no-brainer" – a simple yet indispensable tool that can mean the difference between life and death on your next adventure.
