As emergency preparedness week rolls out, Canadians are urged to take action to ensure they are prepared to protect themselves, their family and their community during an emergency. This year, the annual national event, coordinated by Public Safety Canada, is centred on the theme #ReadyforAnything. This includes communications. Being able to communicate with family, friends and emergency responders during an emergency is critical, and Canadians are asked to keep in mind that everyday communication devices may not work properly during an emergency. SPOT satellite devices provide reliable communications and emergency notification technology, completely independent of traditional communications networks.
According to a new survey of SPOT customers who used the SOS feature on the device to initiate an emergency rescue, the overwhelming majority of respondents agreed on the importance of maintaining 24/7 access to 9-1-1 / SOS emergency services (96%) and that they’d recommend SPOT to a family member or friend (92%).
SPOT satellite devices have been used to initiate more than 7,600 rescues around the world, including 2,500 rescues (or 32%) of which have taken place in Canada. Read about real world SPOT rescue stories here
Search and Rescue (SAR) Manager, Randy Brown, a member of the Penticton B.C. District Search and Rescue organization advises:
“Be prepared with essential gear to help you communicate if an unexpected situation arises. Ensure you have a GPS communication device that works beyond cellular networks, such as a SPOT X, 2-way Satellite Messenger.”
